Inflammation Modifies the Effects of a Reduced-Fat Low-Cholesterol Diet on Lipids

QUESTION: Does a systemic inflammatory activity in patients have an effect on the success of a reduced-fat low-cholesterol diet (DASH: Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension)? Blood lipids and CRP concentration were analysed at baseline as well as after four, eight and twelve study weeks. RESULT: The DASH diet did not show any effect on CRP, but resulted in a significant decrease in total cholesterol. Test persons with low CRP baseline values responded clearly better to the diet than patients with high CRP.
